At EBM Software, getting to know our employees is the best way to understand who we are. This month we’d like to introduce you to Michael Steward, Director. Learn more about his background and what drew him to EBM Software!
Can you tell us a little more about yourself? (Where you are from, where did you go to school, any hobbies, etc.?)
I am originally from San Diego, CA but decided to go “abroad” for college so packed up my bags and moved to Madison, WI to attend University of Wisconsin – Madison. Best decision I could have made as the mid-west continues to surprise and impress. When not having fun in the office, I love to be outside with my wife and dog or out on the golf course. I also love to read and learn on any topic so am often found deep in a rabbit hole researching a topic of little value out of pure curiosity. I am still in search of the end of the internet.
Can you tell us a little bit more about your role?
As a director at MGMT3D & EBM Software, I get to work on a wide variety of projects and topics. I have worked closely with our private equity clients on both sell and buy side acquisitions, as well as taking roles within their operating companies. I have also thoroughly enjoyed getting to work on the future development of Catalyst and helping our software clients maximize the value of the tool during integration and on-going support. I have been able to touch almost every piece of our business which is one of the many reasons I love my role.
What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given to you?
The best piece of advice anyone has given me is to be patient. I was once told that in your 20’s you learn as much as possible, exposing yourself to as many opportunities to learn as you can. In your 30’s you take on as much responsibility and new roles as you can handle. And in your 40’s and beyond the money and titles will take care of themselves because of the work you put in on the front end. This is advice that has always stuck with me and has helped me develop.
Who is your role model that has influenced you the most?
My Dad has always been a great role model and continues to have a huge influence on my life. While growing up with a CFO as a father has its challenges, I have been fortunate enough to have a sounding board for every challenge I have come across who truly understand my challenges both in and out of the office.
What is your favorite quote, movie, book, or song that truly resonates with you? Why?
“Education isn’t something you can finish.” – Isaac Asimov. I love this perspective on life. Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and any individual who thinks they have figured it all out is going to severely limit themselves, both in opportunities and experiences.
What drew you to EBM Software and what are you looking forward to most about working here?
What drew me to EBM/MGMT3D was the people and the opportunity. After meeting with Mike and John I quickly recognized that the leadership team at EBM had a different perspective on teams and their organization than I had come across and their passion and excitement for their business was contagious. I have been extremely fortunate to work alongside them and learn from them and look forward to what challenges we are able to conquer next. And the opportunity to grow and conquer those challenges is the second thing that brought me here. I think we have an extremely fun and exciting story in front of us and we are in the early stages of a unique growth story. Unlike large corporations where you feel like an employee ID and influencing change can be difficult if not possible, I now feel like I can make a meaningful difference and help shape our future for the better. I cannot wait to help write the story and see where we can take this thing over the years to come.
