Your company already has an AI strategy. The opportunity is to make it yours on purpose.

Across your business right now, capable people are using AI to move faster. They are summarizing long documents, drafting client replies, checking a contract clause, pulling a set of figures into shape. Most of them are doing it on their own initiative, through personal accounts, ahead of any formal policy. This is what people mean by shadow AI, and it is worth looking at clearly, because it is often described as a problem when it is really something more useful: a signal.

Here is the reframe that changes the conversation. Every time someone chooses a tool and a way of working with it, they are setting a small piece of your company’s AI strategy. Add all of those choices together, and that is your strategy. It already exists. The one opportunity in front of leadership is to make sure it is the strategy you would have chosen.

How widespread this already is

This is now the norm, and the numbers show it plainly. Netskope’s Cloud and Threat Report 2026 found that 47 percent of people using generative AI at work do so through personal accounts, on tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, using credentials their organization does not manage (Netskope).

The encouraging part sits in the same report. That figure fell from 78 percent the year before, while the share of people working in company-approved accounts climbed from 25 percent to 62 percent. The leaders who are stepping in are already pulling ahead, turning a scattered habit into a capability they run on their own terms. The direction of travel is clear, and it favors the businesses that act.

Why this is good news

It helps to be generous about why shadow AI happens, because the honest answer points straight at the right response. People reach for these tools because they are trying to do good work, faster. That is an engaged, capable team showing you exactly where AI would help them most. They have run the pilot for you, for free, and told you where the value is.

Read that way, shadow AI is a gift. It is a map of the demand inside your business, drawn by the people closest to the work. The task for leadership is a welcome one: give that energy a better home, so the appetite your team already has can run somewhere you can see, support, and build on.

The decision is yours to make

It is tempting to treat this as something to settle later, once there is time for a policy. Waiting feels neutral. In practice, it is a choice: it lets the strategy keep writing itself, one browser tab at a time. Stepping in is how leadership takes the decision back, and it has very little to do with taking tools away.

It is about making the call on purpose. Choosing the environment your teams work in, the standards it meets, and the visibility you have over it, rather than inheriting whatever assembled itself by default. That is the whole idea in one line: the businesses that lead AI are the ones that decided to, deliberately, while the decision was still theirs to make.

What good looks like

Good looks like giving your team the capability they already reached for, in one place that leadership chose and governs. Same speed, same usefulness, now with a clear view of how AI is used across the business and the confidence that comes with it.

That is what SMITH is built for. It gives your teams the AI capability they want, inside one private, governed workspace on your own information. Leadership can see how AI is being used and set the terms, the work stays on your data and in your control, and people get the everyday speed they were looking for in the first place. The appetite your team already showed you now has a home you built for it.

Getting back in the room is a leadership decision, and it is a straightforward one to make well.
