We Look at 3 Critical Trends from Gartner’s Hype Cycle Study.

Every year Gartner releases their Hype Cycle studies on a variety of topics. A particularly interesting area for our business is always the Emerging Technologies study, which highlights tech trends ranging from business tech to biohacking.

The study distills over 2,000 technologies into a neatly grouped set of trends that will likely have a massive impact on the future. This year’s study highlighted a number of new technologies, many with possible implications in the field of data analysis.

We took a look at the study, and singled out 3 must know technologies that will be critical in the analytics field in the next 5 years.

Edge Analytics

The democratization of data will be a key strategy for many businesses over the next 5 to 10 years, especially as more blue-collar jobs are replaced with automation. The ability for workers to quickly analyze data in order to program, maintain and optimize these technologies will be critical. If the machines can fix these issues themselves, even better.

Edge analytics makes all of this possible. Sensor readings can be translated into useable analysis on site, without the need to travel through the entire network to a central location to be processed. This instant analysis could, for example, allow a maintenance worker to see performance readouts in real time on a digital display as he or she diagnoses a machine. Or, it could help detect potential defects or contaminations on the production line before they become problematic.

Graph Analytics

Graph analytics is a fascinating technology that enables many kinds of Big Data analysis. Sometimes called network analysis, graph analytics can be used to determine the relationships between pieces of data and detect patterns in massive bodies of data. Some applications include fraud detection, cybercrime prevention, social media analysis and logistics optimization.

As the technology continues to develop, more companies will use it to identify emerging trends and manage risk, hedging their bets on their investments based on cleverly applied data insights instead of gut feel.

5G

When it comes to data analysis, there is no doubt 5G will have a huge impact. 5G allows the transmission of data at speeds nearly 100x faster than that of 4G. Where downloading a 2-hour long movie on a 4G network currently takes about 6 minutes, 5G will cut that time to just 3.6 seconds.

These blazing fast transmission speeds will enable devices connected over the Internet-of-Things (IoT) to upload large quantities of data – from video to sensor readings – to the Cloud almost instantaneously. When you consider how this could work in concert with the other technologies mentioned above, you can see the potential for once unthinkable analysis quickly coming within reach.
